polymer

Radical polymerization of polymers
🎯 Difficulty ★★☆ Medium Duration About 1 day 🎯 Use Synthesize polymers such as polystyrene by radical polymerization for materials study.
📖 Principle
An initiator generates radicals that chain monomers into long macromolecules.
Below are 5 steps. Open each to see how to do it and add products to your shared list.

📋 Workflow

1

Purify monomer

30 min
Distill or column-pass the monomer to remove inhibitor and impurities.
💡 Tip Deoxygenation raises molecular weight
⚠️ Caution Monomers are often flammable

2

Set up reaction

30 min
Dissolve monomer and initiator in solvent in a flask and degas.
💡 Tip Purge with N₂ to remove oxygen
🧪 Materials for this step (click to shop by spec/brand)
3

Polymerize

Hours
Stir at constant temperature until the target conversion.
💡 Tip Lower temperature gives higher MW
⚠️ Caution Control temperature to avoid runaway

4

Precipitate

1 h
Pour the solution into a nonsolvent such as methanol to precipitate the polymer.
💡 Tip Vigorous stirring prevents clumping

5

Dry & weigh

Hours
Vacuum-dry the polymer and weigh to calculate yield.

⚠️ 5 Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Oxygen poisons the polymerization
  • Runaway at high temperature
  • Wrong initiator level hurts conversion
  • Poor precipitation leaves oligomers
  • Unpurified monomer inhibits growth

❓ FAQ

+Low molecular weight?
Lower initiator, temperature, or extend time.
+Impure product?
Re-precipitate multiple times.
+Control dispersity?
